Is based on the exploits of Texas bad man John Wesley Hardin, played here quite convincingly. The film takes the approach of condemning evil by showing as much evil as the censor will allow.
After nearly an hour of unrepentant perfidy, Hardin settles down to marry good woman. In middle age, he determines to steer his son clear of outlawry, resulting in a sentimental but non-maudlin finale. Directed by, who had given his first screen role in, was reportedly instrumental in landing as starring role in ' (1956).

Plot[edit]
Wild West gunslinger and gambler John Wesley Hardin (Rock Hudson) is pardoned and released from Huntsville, Texas prison in 1896, after serving 16 years of a 25-year sentence. He recounts his exploits outside the law (shown in flashbacks) with a manuscript detailing his life. The woman he planned to marry is killed, and he later marries a saloon girl (Julie Adams). On the run and using aliases, they begin a normal life, and have a son just before he is captured and sent to prison.
